The world’s first wave of 5G-Advanced network release, ushering in a new era of 5G-A

On October 11, 2023, during the 14th Global Mobile Broadband Forum MBBF held in Dubai, the world’s leading 13 operators jointly released the first wave of 5G-A networks, marking the transition of 5G-A from technical validation to commercial deployment and the beginning of a new era of 5G-A.

5G-A is based on the evolution and enhancement of 5G, and is a key information technology that supports the digital upgrading of industries such as the 3D and cloudization of the internet industry, the intelligent interconnection of all things, the integration of communication perception, and the flexibility of intelligent manufacturing. We will further deepen the transformation of digital intelligence society and promote the improvement of digital economy quality and efficiency.

Since 3GPP named 5G-A in 2021, 5G-A has developed rapidly, and key technologies and values such as 10 Gigabit capability, passive IoT, and sensing have been validated by leading global operators. At the same time, the industrial chain actively cooperates, and multiple mainstream terminal chip manufacturers have released 5G-A terminal chips, as well as CPE and other terminal forms. In addition, XR’s high, medium, and low end devices that cross experience and ecological inflection points are already available. The 5G-A industry ecosystem is gradually maturing.

In China, there are already many pilot projects for 5G-A. Beijing, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Guangdong and other places have launched various 5G-A pilot projects based on local policies and regional industrial ecology, such as naked eye 3D, IoT, vehicle connectivity, and low altitude, taking the lead in launching the commercial pace of 5G-A.
The world’s first wave of 5G-A network release was jointly attended by representatives from multiple cities, including Beijing Mobile, Hangzhou Mobile, Shanghai Mobile, Beijing Unicom, Guangdong Unicom, Shanghai Unicom, and Shanghai Telecom. In addition, CMHK, CTM, HKT, and Hutchison from Hong Kong and Macau, as well as major T operators from overseas, such as STC Group, UAE du, Oman Telecom, Saudi Zain, Kuwait Zain, and Kuwait Ooredoo.

GSA Chairman Joe Barrett, who presided over this announcement, said: We are pleased to see many operators have launched or will launch 5G-A networks. The release ceremony of the world’s first wave of 5G-A network signifies that we are entering the 5G-A era, moving from technology and value verification to commercial deployment. We predict that 2024 will be the first year of commercial use for 5G-A. The entire industry will work together to accelerate the implementation of 5G-A into reality.
The 2023 Global Mobile Broadband Forum, with the theme of “Bringing 5G-A into Reality,” was held from October 10th to 11th in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Huawei, together with its industrial partners GSMA, GTI, and SAMENA, has gathered with global mobile network operators, vertical industry leaders, and ecological partners to explore the successful path of 5G commercialization and accelerate the commercialization of 5G-A.
