Wei Jinwu from China Unicom: The Next Three Years are the Most Critical Window Period for 6G Research

At the recently held “6G Collaborative Innovation Seminar”, Wei Jinwu, Vice President of China Unicom Research Institute, delivered a speech stating that in October 2022, ITU officially named the next generation mobile communication “IMT2030″ and basically confirmed the research and standardization work plan for IMT2030. With the advancement of various work, 6G research is currently entering a new stage of standardization, and the next three years are the most critical window period for 6G research.
From the perspective of China, the government attaches great importance to the development of 6G and clearly proposes in the outline of the 14th Five Year Plan to proactively lay out 6G network technology reserves.
Under the leadership of the IMT-2030 promotion team, China Unicom has established a group level 6G working group to promote joint innovation in 6G industry, academia, research and application, focusing on core technology research, ecological construction, and pilot development.
China Unicom released the “China Unicom 6G White Paper” in March 2021, and again released the “China Unicom 6G Communication Intelligent Computing Integrated Wireless Network White Paper” and “China Unicom 6G Business White Paper” in June 2023, clarifying the demand vision for 6G. On the technical side, China Unicom has undertaken multiple major 6G national projects and has laid out its work for the next few years; On the ecological side, high-frequency communication joint innovation laboratory and RISTA technology alliance have been established, serving as multiple team leaders/deputy team leaders for IMT-2030 (6G); In terms of trial and error, from 2020 to 2022, a series of tests were carried out, including integrated single AAU sensing, computing and control testing, and pilot application demonstration of intelligent metasurface technology.
Wei Jinwu revealed that China Unicom plans to launch 6G pre commercial testing by 2030.
Facing the development of 6G, China Unicom has achieved a series of research results, especially taking the lead in carrying out domestic 5G millimeter wave work. It has successfully promoted the 26GHz frequency band, DSUUU function, and 200MHz single carrier to become a necessary option in the industry. China Unicom continues to promote, and the 5G millimeter wave terminal network has basically achieved commercial capabilities.
Wei Jinwu stated that communication and perception have always shown a parallel development pattern. With the use of 5G millimeter waves and high-frequency bands, the frequency performance, key technologies, and network architecture of communication and perception have become feasible for integration. The two are moving towards complementary integration and development, achieving dual use of one network and surpassing connectivity.
Wei Jinwu also introduced the progress of 6G oriented networks and businesses such as Tiandi Integration. He finally emphasized that in the process of 6G technology evolution, it is necessary to integrate and innovate various technological systems to make the 6G network more stable and convenient, and achieve flexible interaction between the physical world and the network world.
